Relating to Others.

Quote.

When your mind and heart are truly open abundance will flow to you effortlessly and easily.

Question:

Following your response on “Meditation and Relating to Others”, I’d like to ask for your advice on how to deal with those around you that are spiritually ignorant.  As I advance in my spiritual growth, I feel resistance and tension towards my old friends and their views on life. I get bored and annoyed when all they can talk about is cats and clothes when there’s so much more in life.  I find it even hard to keep up with such conversations and cut them off abruptly by telling them that my life is more than cats and clothes…  What’s more annoying is when they try to impose their views on me or judge me.

The gap between us is growing and I can’t help it.  I also isolate myself as it upsets me to see how ignorant people can be, especially my old friends.

Do I force myself into their company and hope for their transformation with my gentle influence or do I spare myself and go my way?

Response:

No, don’t force yourself to be in anyone’s company that you don’t want to be with. If you no longer relate to your old friends talking about clothes, then you shouldn’t feel as if you have to be around them. Whether your friends are really spiritually ignorant or not, you certainly have a right to associate with and talk about the things that matter to you.  But keep in mind that seeing depth in a person or a subject is, like beauty, in the eyes of the beholder. So if your awareness is so inclined you could conceivably find as much depth in a conversation about cats as you might in a discussion of Kant’s philosophy. The depth of life is there within every expression of life, waiting to be appreciated by those with the consciousness to fathom it, but what avenue you choose to approach it through is strictly a matter of personal preference.

Love,

Deepak
