Rock & Roll Jihad: Deepak Chopra and Jim Buck
February 1st, 2010
3While we may not see it easily, the world is in a constant and irreversible state of change—sometimes seemingly for the better, sometimes seemingly for the worse. This is also true in the relationship between east and west. While news of new Taliban suicide bombings in Pakistan and Afghanistan may not seem like the situation is changing for the better, it is on the sidelines. By “sidelines” we mean cross-cultural exchanges and explorations in areas of music and the other arts where the people—and not their governments—come together. Evidence of this change exists in our friend Salman Ahmad, a Pakistan-born Sufi Muslim rock star, who has sold more than 30 million albums with his band Junoon, which the New York Times called, “the U2 of South Asia”. Although Junoon’s line-up has changed, Salman continues to tour with his new band mates. In mid-January, Salman released his autobiography, Rock & Roll Jihad, published by Simon and Schuster, a well-written and enjoyable book which I, Deepak, had the pleasure and privilege to write the back cover notes for.

Is the Fate of Democracy in Sarah Palin’s Hands?
January 5th, 2010
29A recent review of Sarah Palin’s bestselling book, Going Rogue, ends by declaring that she is the worst nightmare come true for democrats with a small d. This is both a startling and an obvious claim. It’s obvious in that Palin is a rabble-rouser. Without shame or apology she targets the crazy right, fueling their resentment and anger with outright lies. “Death panels” are only the most colorful example. She is willing to bait the mob with any fear about America’s future, from financial collapse to terrorist devastation.

India Comes to the White House, All At Once
November 25th, 2009
6I never expected to see so many faces of modern India as I saw Tuesday night. The White House’s state dinner, its first of the new administration, honored Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. It was every sequin and silk cravat a glittering and sumptuous affair, as the media has made it out to be, Yet in the midst of it all I sensed the first sprouts of a new level of understanding and partnership between India and the United States, something not achieved in all the ceremony of the President’s China visit. There, the smiles of the Chinese were backed by ruthless self-interest. Here one felt a basis of true warmth.

San Francisco Chronicle: Sarah Palin — Fooling None of the People All of the Time
November 22nd, 2009
82Last fall it seemed as if Sarah Palin would light a fuse and cause a social explosion. Behind her beauty-pageant smile lurked the shadow, the dark side of human nature. Her tactic of appealing to the worst impulses of the electorate had a long history in the Republican Party. Indeed, Palin inherited the selfish, mean-spirited values of another politician with a gleaming smile, Ronald Reagan.

The Worlds 7 Most Powerful Teachers
November 18th, 2009
7An inspired teacher changes how you think. A powerful teacher changes how masses of people think. The most powerful teachers go even farther–they elevate our collective consciousness. But this ultimate power can’t exist without the first step, inspiration. The seven people on this list fulfill both requirements.
