I refrain from judging others on a moral basis. I am aware that moral self-righteousness stands in the way of creating success and happiness. -Deepak Chopra

  • How to Stop Worrying and Love the World

We live in times when it seems like a duty to be worried. Two wars, global warming, an out of control oil spill. More than anytime I can remember, people are uniformly glum about the future prospects of the planet. If you aren’t worrying, you feel that somehow you aren’t doing your part.

  • Why is Happiness so Unhappy? Part 2

    March 29th, 2010

The current research into what makes people happy has uncovered some interesting facts, as we saw in the last post. Certain goals, such as getting rich or earning a raise, don’t turn out to make much difference in a person’s level of happiness. In general we aren’t good predictors of what will make us happy in the future. The other findings tend to be just as gloomy and debunking. The new field of so-called “Positive psychology” is better at erasing myths than in creating a new basis for happiness.

Each week, spiritual teacher Deepak Chopra responds to Oprah.com users’ questions with enlightening advice to help them live their best lives.

Q: I’ve just reached 30 years of age, and I’ve started reading into spirituality. It’s beginning to make me address and analyze some important issues in my life. I’ve spent the best part of the last 20 years being plagued by anxiety, fear and phobias that have led me to just go along with things in life whether I enjoy them or not (e.g., work, relationships). As long as I wasn’t stepping out of my comfort zone and had financial security, then that was enough for me. Oprah.com

One piece of bad news that keeps getting repeated has to do with well- being. Americans are bombarded with advice about prevention and positive lifestyle choices. Yet as a population we continue to be more sedentary and obese, with unregulated stress, too little sleep, a high-fat, high-sugar diet, and so on.

  • Why Is Happiness Still a Mystery?

    January 25th, 2010

PBS has just finished a three-part special on human emotions, with the final episode devoted to happiness. It may surprise many that happiness is a hot subject, especially in the new field of positive psychology. Just as medicine studies disease to find out how to get patients well, psychology has almost entirely been about the mind’s maladies. Positive psychology attempts to reverse this focus by studying a person’s strengths rather than his weaknesses.
