Is the American system due for a major overhaul? Three recent crises have exposed major weaknesses in that system. The economic bubble burst after decades of rising prosperity. Health care expenses have soared beyond reason. The military finds itself mired in two wars, even though we are told that a rocky recovery is underway, these crises are more fundamental than they appear. Three pillars of American life are cracking, along with the beliefs that hold them up.
The first, the economic crisis, attacks the belief that money is a panacea. We are so used to prosperity that it’s almost an American patent. Our typical approach to any problem is to throw billions of dollars at it. To be rich is the same as being happy. None of this is necessarily true. Billions of dollars haven’t stopped the drug trade, ended poverty, or cured cancer. On the darker side, the rich have grown obscenely richer, Congress has been deeply corrupted by special interests groups, and even getting elected to higher office is a privilege open almost entirely to the wealthy. New York has a billionaire mayor who spent in excess of $100 million of his own fortune to be re-elected.
On the health front, the skyrocketing cost of medical care reflects the belief that drugs and surgery are the best cures. After decades of teaching and preaching, Americans continue to ignore exercise, diet, and general prevention. As a result, we are an aging society suffering from obesity and a host of lifestyle diseases like coronary artery disease and type II diabetes. Instead of practicing wellness, we allow ourselves to be gouged by hospitals, big pharma, and a Medicare system that pays doctors to perform unnecessary procedures that line their pockets.
On the military front, two wars have resulted directly from the belief that armies and armaments produce security. America spends an inhuman amount on so-called defense, playing into the hands of reckless militarists, whose foreign adventures destroyed Iraqi society and killed at least 100,000 innocent civilians. In Afghanistan our best intentions have mired us in tribal hatred that goes back for centuries, not to mention a failed state where the most basic institutions have collapsed.
How can it be that this country depends on greed, militarism, and medical extortion? I am not painting a bleak picture in order to frighten or depress anyone. It seems only realistic to examine a belief system with fatal flaws. Perhaps it’s time for some false gods to topple. The good news is that we now have leadership in Washington that seems to understand what these crises mean. President Obama represents a turning of the page, and although he faces enormous challenges, he could be the right leader at the right time. He understands that endless military actions, soaring healthcare costs, and unfettered greed aren’t just bad things. They undermine the basis of a healthy society.
But there’s a huge gap between rhetoric and achievement. Without the collective will behind him, and in the face of entrenched special interest groups, Obama will be stranded. A general is helpless without an army, and in this case the army is us, ordinary citizens who can rally behind necessary change. One can only hope that Obama will be able to open the eyes of more and more people, because the future definitely depends on it.

I appreciate this honest talk. What is written here makes perfect sense to me.
Outstanding article-and greatly needed- I will post it in my community-
Exposing error and false God’s is prerequisite to progress in conscious evolution-
Obama does understand, he is the right leader and at the right time- And though it is true in the human experience, “a general is helpless without an army”, nothing is impossible for One who knows he is standing and anchored on Holy ground-
President Obama in a statement two weeks ago stated that he was aware that he had “Core Supporters” The “Core Supporters” are his army, that stand on the same divine ground that he stands upon.
Fully supporting president Obama in Truth,
Gyanama
We wouldn’t be communicating through this burgeoning medium without the myopic world of the industrial revolution. Slowly but surely we’re assimilating to the information revolution we find ourselves in now. President Obama is exactly what America needs for this complex transition and its inevitable growing pains. As we evolve and adapt as a species, and look at our Selves globally in action and thought, our values will become clearer to what it means to be part of the human team.

As always a welcome perspective Deepak. I did, and do continue to support President Obama. However, I am incredibly dismayed by his continued support of status quo cheerleaders as the folks helping to steer our economic system. President Obama cannot wave a magic wand and “fix” our economic crisis but he can choose who he wants working for him. Geithner and Bernanke, especially, seem to be hopelessly compromised by their inclination to favor wall street greed over any other variable. I am well aware that our society cannot completely change direction in a day, but I think it is a fair question to ask whether the administration’s actions regarding our economic direction really represent “Change we can believe in.”
“I am well aware that our society cannot completely change direction in a day”
Are you certain about that?
Re:Certainty
Personal change can happen simply with a deeply-felt shift in perception.
Societal change is like planting a pinecone to grow a forest, or a snowball rolling down a hill. It is not instantaneous but with enough pinecones it is inevitable.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts-
Yes it dose seem that way, from a human perspective-
The world crisis is the very imagined catalyst for individual/collective shifting in consciousness-(from the false to the true understanding)we are all at a choice point, individually and collectively- (The two really are One)
In one day our planet could collapse- and for certain it would seem we are all heading in a direction-under which direction? The direction of human thought? or under the direction of One Mind?
The One Mind that sees no crisis even now-
We are not here to evolve so that we can have a better material condition- we are all here to wake up out of the material condition-Maybe our emphasis and focus and intentions need not be on the economy as much as trying to understand the present perfection that we already live in…
We are all here to wake up to the Spirit of Truth-
We do stand on Holy Ground-that is why you and all men are here…To know that—
Magic wands do exist(the power of divine thoughts and new ideas)-they may appear in disguise for a while, until one wakes up in Truth and sees the Natural beauty and goodness that is already available to experience-
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
“The Forest is beautiful and the snowballing of false beliefs has been melted”….

Unfortunately Obama stopped asking for our help. He has returned to the failed idea of past leaders, “now I’m in, I don’t need you help.”
Kennedy said, “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. In other words, just as with WWII and other times, the American people were asked to help towards some common goal. Now we just see bickering and entitlement. We see CEO asking taxpayers for a handout with no intention of paying it back.
When will Obama ask every American to help? This is what great leaders do. This is why I voted for him.
And until we find a better way to make money, and have the government create jobs, than war & sickness, we are stuck with war and sickness. Without a jobs plan for the 21st century we are destined to follow every other culture that had abundance without direction.
When will Obama ask every American to help?
Go to Organizing for America-
http://www.barackobama.com/
There are many who are helping and have heard the call-and all Americans are welcomed to participate, if willing -
Peace and good will to you-
Thanks for the link. I am aware of and follow Barack’s emails. The challenge is, the message is, “you folks go organize some nice things to help, we here in the government have our own agenda.”
Barack started with a clear goal & call, “I need your help to bring change to the White House.” We were asked to help in a coordinated effort. I personally canvased in Nevada, one state over, and attended local meetings.
But now, we have no national goal! Compare this to asking every American to pitch in on the war effort. THAT is what got us out of the Great Depression. A goal with unity to accomplish that goal. Health insurance reform is a disaster because Barack did not set a goal and ask every American to help. He left the door open for arguing and partisan politics.
Our country is devoid of clear goals that every American could get behind. But look at China’s goal of being the #1 manufacturing nation & India’s goal of #1 software nations. Every citizen has been mobilized behind their stated national goal. And our goal? Consume products?
If I could ask, what is your goal?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts-
“You folks” and the “government” are One-
Here is a refreshing quote from Helen Keller-
“I long to accomplish a great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker”.
Peace and Good Will,
Gyanama
To the one above may I re-quote you-
“A goal with Unity to accomplish that goal”….
Perhaps what your really saying is that the goal really is unity-
The president has just begun a new open Government plan Directive that opens the door for “a goal with unity to accomplish that goal”
I think they should call it
A.C.T. “All come together”
Peace and Good Will,
