On November 7, 2008, at 9:45 am, I, Deepak Chopra, took a vow of non-violence in my thoughts, in my speech and in my actions. I, then, also had an opportunity to ask the almost 500 people attending the plenary session for the Alliance for a New Humanity in Barcelona if they would join me in this commitment.
I first asked them to close their eyes, put their awareness in their hearts and ask themselves honestly and seriously if they were willing to take a vow.
I told them that a vow is a sacred commitment from which there is no going back. It is like a child that is born, who cannot return to the womb.
I told them if they were ready to take this vow, they should stand up.
People stood up, one by one at first, then in groups of twos and threes, and finally in tidal waves, until more than 450 people had stood up and taken the vow.
Following this, everybody agreed to have at least two people in their lives take the vow. The two in turn, would have two others join them in taking the vow. Our immediate goal now is to get 100 Million people across the world to take this vow. In the meantime, we will be setting up ways to measure and support the dramatic effects this tidal wave of shift in consciousness is going to create.
Are you seriously committed to bringing about a world of peace, harmony, laughter and love by taking this vow and getting two people to join you?
If you are ready, please post a blog here.
Let us know that you have passed on the vow to two friends. And, if you wish tell us your thoughts in the post, we would love to hear them.
Love,
Deepak Chopra
President and Founder of the Alliance For A New Humanity

We take the vow of peace in our thoughts, speach and actions on this 12th. day of December.
Wow! I knew that we had to be the peace that we want to se, but I did not know how to get others to also be the peace. I am taking the vow of non-violence now in thought, speach and action on this day, December 12th, 2008. The spiritual centre that I go to is also endeavouring to bring peace: the Great Peace Experiment. Also, there is the TED’s Charter for Compassion. All of this gives me great hope. I love the fact that Deepak Chopra chooses to use his influence for peace and love

Christmas Day, December 25, 2008 at 8:00 P.M.

Susan
I took this vow, and it was amazing how it guided me through Christmas with family members who excluded me from Christmas last year because I do not subscribe to Armageddonist thinking. This year, I was invited to celebrate Christmas with the sister who had excluded me last year. And she invited her gay-couple neighbors to join us for a tour of the lights, which allowed me to have an open conversation about the wonderful movie MILK which I had seen the week before with the Courage Campaign, followed by a candlelight vigil for gay rights. The conversation was natural and inspiring, not confrontive or combative with the sister who had told me she had voted YES on proposition 8 because she believes “marriage is only between a man and a woman.”
I shared Harvey Milk’s HOPE SPEECH QUOTE from 1978: “Without hope, not only gays, but those who are blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors– the ‘us’s’– without hope the ‘us’s’ give up. I know that you can’t live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you, and you, and you have got to give them hope.”
Today I take a vow to be consciously aware of my commitment to non-violence both in my speech
and in my actions towards all humanity. I want to be proud of who I am and how I choose to
interract with my fellow neighbor. There is no greater feeling than to be kind to someone other
than to my self with absolutely no expectation or disappointment. We all deserve a better world
for our children, our parents, and for ourselves. We’ve all been hurt, pained and ridiculed and it
is now time to translate those emotions in to forgiveness and unconditional love not only to our own
self but to extend the same for those around us, especially to those we have yet to befriend. I love
life in all of God’s splendor even if some moments are concealed by trajedy and heartache.. I take full
responsibility for my contamination and contribution towards our magnificent world- from this moment
on I choose contribution. I wish you all well.
